Doing a Gut Check: Making Decisions with Your Intuition

by Bing Wu

Making decisions with your intuition

Sometimes you’re stuck trying to make a decision and you need answers, right now.

Should you go out on a date with a certain new prospect?

Is this new job or educational/training program right for you?

Should you a certain item that’s on sale?

You’re trying to decide between two or more alternatives, but you’re not sure what to do.

Wouldn’t it be great if a loud, clear voice from above would pipe up and say “Choose option X. It will lead to your greatest happiness and fulfillment”.

Sometimes, that’s really what happens. We’re all connected to a spiritual support system that includes our Higher Self, angels, and spirit guides. They can communicate with us in very direct and profound ways.

But most of the time, we don’t get such direct communication, leaving us feeling out in the cold, wanting guidance but not seeing or hearing any tangible signs.

Where is our spiritual support system when we need it most?

At times like this it’s easy to forget that clairvoyance and clairaudience (the psychic senses of seeing and hearing) aren’t the only ways that our spiritual support system communicates with us.

Sometimes the answer is lurking just below the surface – in the form of feelings. Most people are clairsentient, i.e. have the psychic sense of feeling, to a certain degree.

One of the easiest and most common ways for your guides and Higher Self to talk to you is through your feelings, i.e. your psychic sense of clairsentience. There are a few reasons for this. Many people haven’t developed their sense of clairvoyance or clairaudience, and aren’t yet ready to receive information this way.

But more importantly, communicating with you through your feelings is enough to give you a nudge in the right direction, but not so forceful that your guides and Higher Self overpower your free will to make your own choices.

In a life or death situation, your guides, angels and Higher Self may well swoop down to Earth in physical form and undertake direct intervention. But most of the time, our spiritual support system is there to provide more subtle guidance, giving us clues and hints, while allowing us to retain ownership over our decisions.

Even though your spirit guides and Higher Self may not appear as a tangible beings every time you need help, you can still tap into their guidance and wisdom – by doing a gut check.

When you have an important decision or choice to make, and need some guidance, write down all your options on a piece of paper. Don’t worry – that’s as hard as it gets.

Now, go through each of your options, and visualize, in your mind’s eye, the outcome of choosing that option. Feel as though you’ve already made a decision to pursue that option, and take a look at your surroundings – what are all the consequences of the choice you’ve just made? Be optimistic, but realistic. As you’re playing out each option in your mind’s eye, pay attention to how you’re feeling in your gut.

Does this feel like a desirable option? Are you learning and growing in this situation, or stagnating? Will this choice lead to other desirable options down the road? Do you like the people you will encounter on this path?

The goal is to dig beyond your surface emotions and desires surrounding each option, and really tap into the feelings of the future “you” that is already living the consequences of your potential choices. In the process, you’ll uncover and expose many of your feelings about the various options.

Sometimes this process works better when you’re meditating, on a peaceful walk outdoors, or some other activity where you work yourself into a rhythm and temporarily disconnect from your dominant, circular thoughts. I’ve had breakthroughs while washing dishes. :)

When you’re in a tough spot, trying to make a decision but dealing with confusion and noise, know that your spiritual support system has your back. Sometimes even your best option may not seem that appealing. There isn’t always an easy, obvious choice – at least not from your perspective. But if you ask and listen, you might see or hear… but you’re more likely to feel ;)

Hey Alex,

Great article! I was just wondering how this method of “checking your gut” relates to more physical or psychological theories describing similar phenomenon. For example, when you read psychology on this same subject the theory is often that your gut feeling is a result of your subconscious working out many different scenarios that your conscious mind cant really process all at once. Thus when you think about all options for a decision your subconscious has already crunched all the numbers (so to say), came up with the best decision and is sending a message to your conscious mind through feelings.

This is obviously very similar to what you’re saying, so I was wondering where does one end and the other begin? Is all intuition spiritual or is the subconscious responsible for some things as well? Or is it just the case that the spiritual intuition uses the same subconscious pathways to deliver the message?

Drasko – you’re right that it could be your sub-conscious speaking. Sometimes we expect spiritual communication to be very profound. But spiritual guidance will use the same channels as your sub-conscious mind or even your imagination. The only way to know whether it’s real guidance is by how you feel. Do you feel good about the advice and direction that you’re receiving? If you do, it’s because it aligns with who you are on a deeper, spiritual level.

Even if the guidance IS only your sub-conscious… if you can get out of your head and the circular thoughts going on there, and that helps you get unstuck and arrive at a conclusion that you are comfortable with, hey, what’s wrong with that?
